Pattern for a leather backpack by Fashion.at

Recently, Fashion.at publisher Karin Sawetz found a 30 x 140 cm piece of brown imitation leather in her fabric collection that she had once bought for upholstering seats. The material is of a firmer quality for the desired longer life. Too much material to throw away, not enough to make something with, was the first thought. But then the calculations began and the pattern for a backpack for cycling was drawn. The requirements for the bag are to carry a credit/id card case, phone, keys, lipstick, small perfume and if necessary a light jacket or pullover.

The straps:
For the two straps, cut 2x 3 cm x 140 cm; fold the 3 cm pieces of fabric into 1 cm wide straps.

The bag:
Cut the fabric into two 70 x 24 cm pieces.
Cut the two pieces in half to make four pieces of 35 x 24 cm. (3 cm of the 35 cm will later be folded and stepped with a seam for the tunnel of the straps; the height of the bag in the end will be about 31 cm.)
To give the shape of the bag an anatomical touch without reducing the storage space too much, slightly (0,5 cm difference) curve the lines on the edges of the longitudinal seams with the biggest bulge in the middle (calculate in the length minus the three centimeters for the tunnel). Sew two pieces together, one for the front and one for the back of the bag, and stitch a quilted seam.
You now have two large pieces. Round the edges at the bottom.
Sew the 3 cm tunnel.
Stitch the front and back together up to the tunnel seam.

Finishing:
Thread the 1cm straps through the tunnels (a safety pin will help pull them through the folded fabric).
Insert eyelets.
Knot end of straps to desired length.
