Designing Through Travel: Michalsky's Inspiration from Iconic Cities

Announced today, the Michael Michalsky x Ruggable collection reflects the atmosphere, history, and artistic heritage of five cities that have influenced the designer. In an accompanying video, Michalsky explains that he drew inspiration from places where he has lived, worked, or visited - particularly their architecture and cultural essence.

Vienna (Beige & Stone Gray): This design pays tribute to Viennese Modernism, a movement shaped by artists and architects like Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, and Josef Hoffmann. The subtle geometric pattern echoes the structured elegance of Wagner's iconic buildings, such as the Postsparkasse and the Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station, while the neutral color palette reflects the refined minimalism of the era.

New York (Indigo & Cream): Inspired by the Art Deco grandeur of Manhattan, this rug channels the sleek geometric patterns seen in landmarks like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building. The mix of deep indigo, warm brown, and soft neutrals mirrors the city's high-rise skyline, structured street grid, and the timeless appeal of its historic skyscrapers.

Paris (Tonal Gray): This design captures Parisian elegance through a blend of classic and modern influences. Inspired by the soft textures of Persian Gabbeh rugs, it reflects the understated luxury of an Avenue Montaigne apartment. The geometric pattern and neutral palette of gray, tan, and brown create a seamless harmony with both vintage and contemporary interiors. The aesthetic also nods to the refined minimalism of Eileen Gray's furniture designs, making it a perfect fit for sophisticated living spaces.

London (Olive & Green): This design captures the unique blend of nostalgia and innovation found in London. Inspired by the patterned seat fabrics of the London Underground, the rug's structured cubist elements bring a vintage charm with a modern twist. The green hues also nod to the city's historic parks, such as Hyde Park and Regent's Park, balancing urban energy with natural serenity.

Berlin (Anthracite & Sand): Reflecting the raw creativity of Berlin's 1920s art scene, this rug draws inspiration from Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a key figure in German Expressionism. Known for his bold, angular street scenes of Berlin, Kirchner captured the movement and energy of places like Potsdamer Platz. The rug's contrasting patterns and dynamic color play bring this artistic spirit to life.

A Collection for Style-Conscious, Practical Living

The Michael Michalsky x Ruggable collection is designed for those who appreciate both aesthetics and functionality. The carefully chosen colors make these rugs not only stylish but also practical for everyday use - perfect for city dwellers who want high-end design without worrying about dirt from the streets.
