19th century hero's fashion
The 19th century superhero style is back in fashion and film.
Yesterday on 5 June 2012, the new Prada men's wear Autumn/Winter 2012/13 campaign was unveiled. The campaign shows Hollywood actors like Gary Oldman and Willem Dafoe in 19th century power posings. In the same month on 22 June 2012, the global release of Tim Burton's new movie 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' - a 19th century supernatural horror film, starts. The costumes are designed by a specialist for historical clothing and powerful appearances.
The movie is a fantastic story about the civil, secret part of Lincoln's life. The 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln lived from 1809 to 1865 and stands for ending of slavery, emancipation of humans in times of American Civil War.
The movie's director Timur Bekmambetov says in the featurette (above) that the role 'Abraham Lincoln' (starring Benjamin Walker) is the one of 'Batman of the 19th century'. Batman in a vampire country.
The back-in-fashion 19th century style of Abraham Lincoln's time (the image from 1864 of the President at the First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation shows similarities to the power posings at the Prada campaign, photographed by David Sims) was translated for the movie 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' by Carlo Poggioli and Varya Avdyushko into vampire and vampire hunter outfits.
Costume designer Carlo Poggioli studied stage and costume design at the Istituto D'Arte and The Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, worked in Rome for Italian costume designers such as Gabriella Pescucci, Piero Tosi, Maurizio Millenotti and for movies like J. J. Annaud's 'The Name of the Rose' or Martin Scorsese's 'The Age Of Innocence'.
Other prominent movies on his list are 'The Brothers Grimm' and 'Van Helsing'. Alongside to his film engagement, Carlo Poggioli makes costume designs for opera stages such as at the Teatro alla Scala Milano or the Salzburg Opera Theatre.
