Islamic culture in fashion and textiles

From 11 December 2013 until 21 April 2014, works by the nominated artists and designers for this year's 'Jameel Prize' will be exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

It's a premiere that fashion designers are nominated for the Jameel Prize. The award was given for the first time in 2009 to a multimedia art-design work which reflects Islamic culture. In the third year, the jury under patronage of architect, designer Zaha Hadid selected the Turkish design duo Dice Kayek to represent reflections of fashion on Islamic culture. Dice Kayek throw light on the city Istanbul which is in the eyes of Ece and Ayse Ege a city full of contrast - not only in lifestyle or architecture, "in every area" such as the sisters say in the video (above). Dice Kayek's 19 dresses will be exhibited under the title 'Istanbul Contrast'.

On the website of the Jameel Prize (organized by the Victoria & Albert Museum), the 10 nominated artists and designers are listed; each of them with video and short introduction into the person and work such as textile designer Rahul Jain (New Dehli, India) who is inspired by 2000 years tradition and interprets historical patterns in new ways (video) or Faig Ahmed (Baku, Azerbaijan) who uses visual esthetics of digital media to 'reconfigure' common patterns. Faig Ahmed says in the video (below): "The main things that interest me are the old traditions, ancient cultures and standard canons, stereotypes which end up by being broken by me."

The winner of the 'Jameel Prize' will be announced on 10 December 2013; one day later on 11 December, the exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum will be opened for the public.
