Ballet with hip-hop street dance rhythms about 'radio' as community kit

Kyle Abraham's award-winning dance choreography 'The Radio Show' is on tour. Abraham's company Abraham.In.Motion will perform on 13 February 2014 at Canada's National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ontario and from 20 to 23 February at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

Kyle Abraham is one of the hottest new US choreographers; in 2010, he received the Princess Grace Award for his work. 'The Radio Show' is a mix of classical ballet and moves from street dance with music from hip-hop, soul, pop to electronic, contemporary classical compositions like by Ryoji Ikeda. The show reflects upon the impact of a radio station for living together in a city - and the loss of it, and incorporates the choreographer's personal experiences he made with his father's Alzheimer and the effects on his family.

Since the premiere in early 2010, media reports about the performance such as LA Times highlighted the nonlinearity and action-painting style of the dance which is about loosing memory and identity. New York Times called Sarah Cubbage's costume design 'sexy'.

Video: Teaser for 'The Radio Show'. The dance performance was created by Kyle Abraham after his hometown R&B, soul radio station in Pittsburgh was closed.
