Archer Elisabeth Straka belongs to the 'avant-garde' of the Olympic Team Austria. She was one of the first to spot the area in Paris.

The Olympic Team Austria has sent an update from the first check-ins of the athletes in the Olympic Village. Archer Elisabeth Straka from Lower Austria, who will be competing in her first Olympic Games, was part of the 'avant-garde' and arrived together with her coach Andrea Raigel five days before the Opening Ceremony on July 26th. The photos and video (on Instagram) show Straka in the black-gray melange t-shirt made from a cooling fabric designed by Erima especially for the Austrian team in Paris, combined with the brand's black sports shorts.

In the press release, Straka talks about her impressions of arriving at the airport and the Olympic Village. The athlete was positively surprised when she arrived at the airport. The whole airport had the look of the Olympic Games and the volunteers helped and explained everything right away. "I already thought about what the Olympic Village might look like - but it's all a size bigger than I imagined," reports Elisabeth Straka from Paris.

Today she trained at the competition site in Paris. The archery competitions will take place in the garden opposite the palace-like building 'Hôtel des Invalides', originally built in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV as a home for war-disabled soldiers (house of invalids), today it houses a museum of French military history, various statues and the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte (details at https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/venues/invalides). The archers will stand on a podium and not on the ground, which is rather unusual. The athletes' training sessions will be used to acclimatize to the facility and the wind conditions. The qualification round for the women's archery competition will take place on Thursday, one day before the official opening ceremony. The top 16 from this round with 64 competitors will advance with the finals and the medal ceremonies taking place on July 28.

"I knew that I would be the first to arrive at the Olympic Village, but I didn't know that I would be the first to start. I'm happy about that, maybe a few teammates will come by to cheer me on. It's certainly not a bad thing to have something 'done' before the opening ceremony and then be able to enjoy it more. Hopefully I won't be finished yet and will be able to shoot again on Sunday," says Straka.

The athlete carries two identical bows in case something gets damaged or breaks in the heat. The replacement bow has a gold grip. What the archer was not prepared for were the many pigeons. The 24-year-old usually trains on a field at home in Lichtenwörth near Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. "Sometimes an eagle circles over my head or a few deer hop past. But I'm not used to pigeons diving in front of the target. However, it didn't really bother me," says Straka. The pigeons remained intact. Photo: ÖOC / Florian Rogner.
