Christmas travel tip, focus on the Salzkammergut: Advent activities in Austria's Small Historic Towns

Fashion.at was looking for destinations in more rural regions outside of the big cities in Austria to visit during the Advent season and came across the season-specific information of the Small Historic Towns, which are defined by their historic townscapes with numerous heritage-protected sights and embedded in natural landscapes, as well as by the size of no more than 45,000 inhabitants. In other words, the Small Historic Towns are culturally interesting destinations. During the Advent and New Year's seasons, the towns have prepared programs to spread Christmas magic with festive lights, charming winter markets and local traditions.

The publisher of Fashion.at has already visited all the towns through the years, most recently the beautiful Bad Ischl. The town was one of the most impressive locations during the press tours to the exhibitions and events of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. The Salzkammergut region has become almost dear to Fashion.at this year. There were for example the cyclists on the traces of the women of the resistance (article) or the dress installation by Chiharu Shiota (article) or the 'DataBank@futureGARDEN' by Eva Petric (article), etc. The train connection from Vienna to the Salzkammergut towns is comfortable and makes the journey fly by. The grand finale of this year's European Capital of Culture Salzkammergut will take place on November 30 (details at www.salzkammergut-2024.at).

Bad Ischl is also one of the highlights of the Small Historic Towns Advent and New Year's Eve event calendar, with a historic Christmas market in the Trinkhalle and a 'Schmankerldorf' offering local delicacies. One of the highlights in the first days of the new year is the Glöcklerlauf (night of January 5-6) - a tradition in which people walk around the town with bells on their belts to drive away evil spirits. On their heads they wear elaborate headdresses representing the cycle of nature.

The Salzkammergut is not the only region with historic towns according to the definition mentioned at the beginning. The information about the activities of the current 16 towns of the 'Small Historic Towns' all over Austria from the east of Lower Austria to the west of Vorarlberg (in alphabetical order: Baden bei Wien, Bad Ischl, Bad Radkersburg, Bludenz, Braunau am Inn, Bruck an der Mur, Freistadt, Fürstenfeld, Gmunden am Traunsee, Hallein, Hartberg, Judenburg, Radstadt, Schärding am Inn, Steyr, Wolfsberg) is published on www.khs.info.
