Repairing: A Sustainable Movement Gaining Momentum in Vienna
Vienna's Initiatives Promote Resource Conservation and Craftsmanship Revival

Repairing as a Recurring Theme

The concept of repairing has been a recurring theme on Fashion.at for years, with numerous articles exploring its significance. One notable example is the coverage of the re:pair Festival 2024 in Vienna, which highlighted the importance of extending the lifespan of fashion and furniture. The festival featured over 120 events, including workshops on creative mending techniques and discussions on sustainable practices. With most events offered free of charge, the festival aimed to make repairing accessible to a broad audience. However, Vienna's commitment to repair culture extends far beyond just a few weeks each year.

How Repair Culture Supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Repairing aligns closely with several of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By promoting the reuse and restoration of goods, repairing contributes to responsible consumption and production (Goal 12), industry innovation and infrastructure (Goal 9), and climate action (Goal 13). Encouraging repair over disposal reduces waste, conserves resources, and fosters sustainable economic growth.

48er-Tandler: Vienna's Hub for Second-Hand Goods

The 48er-Tandler, Vienna's municipal second-hand market operated by MA 48, offers a diverse range of pre-owned items, including vintage furniture, clothing, books, and sports equipment. Located in the 5th district at Siebenbrunnenfeldgasse 3, the market provides an eco-friendly shopping experience that supports waste reduction and resource conservation. The assortment includes items donated at Vienna's waste collection points, unclaimed lost property, and surplus goods from various city departments. Proceeds from sales support charitable organizations, making it beneficial for both the environment and the community.

Repair Cafés: Fostering a Culture of Repair

In line with the circular economy principle of "reuse instead of waste," the 48er-Tandler hosts Repair Cafés with sewing stations multiple times a year. These events offer Vienna residents the opportunity to have small electrical appliances and textiles repaired by specialists. While textile repairs are available without prior registration, electrical appliance repairs require advance booking through the 48er-Tandler website. This initiative not only extends the lifespan of personal belongings but also promotes sustainable consumption habits.

Special Events Promoting Sustainable Fashion

Beyond regular repair services, the 48er-Tandler organizes special events to raise awareness about sustainable fashion. For instance, in March 2023, the venue hosted a fashion show by an Iranian-born designer, accompanied by a lecture and discussion on sustainable fashion practices. Such events highlight the creative potential of upcycled materials and the importance of conscious consumer choices in the fashion industry.

Upcoming Repair Café Dates

The 48er-Tandler has scheduled several Repair Café sessions for 2025 at its Margareten location (5th district, Siebenbrunnenfeldgasse 3). The upcoming dates are:

- February 20, 2025 2-6 pm (registration no longer possible)

- April 24, 2025, from 2 PM to 6 PM

- June 26, 2025, from 2 PM to 6 PM

- Additional sessions planned for August, November, and December 2025

Registrations for electrical appliance repairs can be made at 48er-Tandler's official website. Textile repairs do not require prior registration.

A Movement Towards Resource Conservation and Craft Revival

The growing emphasis on repairing reflects a broader movement towards resource conservation and a renewed appreciation for craftsmanship. Repaired items are increasingly valued not only for their extended utility but also for the unique character and history they embody. This shift signifies a cultural reevaluation of consumption patterns, where sustainability and creativity intersect to redefine the worth of goods in our society.
