Fashion Stereotypes from
Paper Magazines on Vintage Jewellery
Petra Zimmerman (born 1975 in Graz) presents in the exhibition “Off the Wall II” her view on glamour which she has found in lifestyle magazines. Therefore she tranfers the classical fashion stereotypes from paper to vintage, mass-produced jewellery from flea markets.
How the jewellery is made
Fascinated for the superficiality of the fashion industry, the Austrian artist collects for her work newspaper clippings of fashion jewellery from the thirties and fifties and transfers the collected images from her newspaper clippings into pigmented plastics. Her artistic interpretation intends to reveal itself through the various methods by means of color, gold, silver, rivets and rhinestones. The selected spatial presentation and form reshapes the original context.

Kitsch Beauty
Zimmermann’s jewellery leads to new possibilities for interpretation, as she is fascinated in the unusual interaction of kitsch elements, artistic interpretation and critical reflection. Zimmermann’s works convey a thoughtful consideration upon the forceful attraction that kitsch beauty has, through its allure, value and expiration date.
