The Good Shepherd 2007
director: Robert De Niro, written by Oscar® winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump),
cast: Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie, Joe Pesci, Alec Baldwin, William Hurt, Jason Patric, Timothy Hutton, Billy Crudup, Michael Gambon
For this movie costume designer Ann Roth collected a wardrobe which spans from 1925 to 1961. For Jolie’s character, Roth reflects, “I knew a lot of Clovers in my life. They went to finishing school; there was a glamour about them, but it was very homegrown.” Clover does not wear the latest styles from Europe, but rather buys her clothes where her mother shops, or they are made by her mother’s dressmaker. For Roth the white gown Clover wears the night she meets Wilson is a summer party dress that she had probably “worn once before to a party.” After Clover and Edward are married, her new role as a proper housewife is evident in her conservative choice of clothes.
