Counting cards isn't illegal!
story: 21 is based on a true story. Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is a shy, brilliant M.I.T. student and a group of the
school’s most gifted students heads to Vegas every weekend and turn with their know-how blackjack in their favor. With unorthodox
math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) leading the way, they’ve
cracked the code. By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the
team can beat the casinos big time. Although counting cards isn't illegal, the security chief of the casino Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne) is after them ...
Costume Designer Luca Mosca was responsible to transform the actors from M.I.T. students
into Vegas’s highest rollers. “It was great fun to create the chameleon quality of
these kids from one environment into the next,” he says. “It was especially challenging to
gradually build Ben, our lead, from a plain student in a maroon M.I.T. sweatshirt
into a student with a new degree of confidence without revealing too much,”
Mosca notes.
27-year-old Londoner Jim Sturgess says that his costume helped
him find the role. “When you're in a classroom with a check shirt and a hoodie, it
helps you feel like an M.I.T. student. When you're in the bright lights of Vegas in
an Armani suit and thousands of dollars in your pocket, it definitely helps you to
make the transition.”
Kate Bosworth says, “One of my favorite things about the project was the fact that the students
disguised themselves so that they wouldn’t be recognized by the casinos. I had
my ‘Southern Belle’ look, my ‘Soprano-Jersey Girl’ look, and my ‘Louise Brooks’
look. It was fun!”
Costume Designer Luca Mosca (born in Milan,
Italy) first studied medicine and became a
doctor. Soon he found out that his real talent lies in fashion arts and worked 5
years as a couture designer for the Italian fashion houses Romeo Gigli and
Callaghan. In 1994 Luca Mosca moved to US where he co-founded and designed the first "LUCA+MARCO" (Marco after the first name of business partner Marco Cattoretti) collection
which was sold by high-end stores worldwide.
Shortly after, the Mosca-Cattoretti design team began to design the costumes for their first film. Mosca has since served in various costume design positions for such award winning
feature films as Girlfight (starring Michelle Rodriguez), Hamlet 2000 (starring Ethan
Hawke, Sam Shepard, Bill Murray and Julia Stiles), 3 AM (starring Michelle
Rodriguez, Danny Glover and Pam Grier), In the Weeds (starring Eric Bogosian,
Ellen Pompeo, and Molly Ringwald), Griffin And Phoenix (starring Blair Brown,
Dermot Mulroney and Amanda Peet) and others. Mosca also designed costumes for
TV and
creates fashion collections for several high end and trend driven international
companies. His work will next be seen in
Columbia Pictures’ 21 (release in spring 2008).
