Digital Formalism. The 'Poetika Vertoviana’ between Archive and Digital

The team of Prof. Dr. Klemens Gruber and Dr. Andrea B. Braidt at the Department for Theatre, Film and Media Studies (TFM), Vienna University, worked the last three years on the project "Digital Formalism: The Vienna Vertov Collection" with focus on a computer-aided digital analysis of the “senses of cinema” digitalformalism.org.

The international conference at the Austrian Filmmuseum in January 2008 aims at a grounding the project's theoretical and methodological approach. It is dedicated to a (re-)construction of what we have termed a “Poetika Vertoviana”, while discussing various concepts such as the “archive”, the “interval”, “digital”, “data based film analysis”, all contextualizing Vertov’s filmmaking and the "Digital Formalism" focus of research. „Digital formalism" in its media-archaeological approach wants to revise the concept of the Digital as well as the impact of Russian formalist film theory.
