“St. Trinian’s girls are always independent and in control, not afraid to say what they think and happy to bend the rules to get their own way." says co-director Barnaby Thompson.
The movie with comedians like Rupert Everett (Shrek, My Best Friend’s Wedding, An Ideal Husband) and Colin Frith (Bridget Jones Diary, The Importance of Being Earnest) is about a new generation of schoolgirls - and teachers. The classic image of school runs in this chic, rebellious film amok. Before making the film the directors have researched in a number of schools to find a interpretation of today's schoolgirls. The characters are taken of the current youth scene: Emos, geeks, chavs, trustafarians, posh tottie, ...
Caterina Murino: "I play the French mistress. She teaches in a very particular way and she’s very sexy. She teaches Spanish and, because we are St Trinian’s we also teach smuggling. We always spend the staffroom time just playing and smoking and teaching the girls how to play poker. I get to have a lot of costume changes because my character is French and thus very classy and chic."
The story is about St Trinian’s, an infamous school for ‘young ladies’, which is again in a financial crisis. The St Trinian’s girls are smart, fearless and determined to defend the school they love to the end. They need to unite the warring girl gang cliques and come up with the cash fast. Head Girl Kelly (Gemma Arterton) and new scholar Annabelle (Talulah Riley) join forces and gather together a crew of teachers and school girls. They’re planning to steal the famous painting “Girl With A Pearl Earring” from the National Gallery, right under the noses of the authorities. But can their combined cunning, girlish wiles and total lack of shame win the day before the authorities close them down for good? All of the hilarious antics and the girl-power action, which have made St Trinian’s one of Britain’s greatest and best-loved national institutions, are back on the big screen. www.sttriniansmovie.co.uk
A host of rising talent plays the new breed of modern day St Trinian’s girls including Gemma Arterton making her feature film debut as Kelly, the head girl, Talulah Riley (Pride And Prejudice), Amara Karan (The Darjeeling Limited), singer Paloma Faith, Tamsin Egerton (Keeping Mum), Antonia Bernath and top international model Lily Cole, taking the role of student Polly.
Gemma Arterton:"I play Kelly Jones – she’s the head girl of St Trinian’s. It’s really strange, because she’s actually the most mature character in the whole film, I think. She kind of has to keep everybody else, even the teachers, under wraps. She’s the boss of everyone. But she is also a bit of a naughty tearaway. Because St Trinian’s girls are naughty by nature, she’s the head girl of the naughtiness, I suppose. But she does keep everyone in line as well, so everyone doesn’t get too naughty. Well they have to contain it, at least!"
