Most of Canonero’s work was Earth-bound; even her space suit designs have a kind of non-sci fi feel.

“We really didn’t make space suits,” Canonero points out. "What George and Viola wear are called pressure suits, which our research revealed is the type of suit worn today for safety when docking or taking off in a space ship. It’s not used for the exploration of space; those suits are much heavier.

“Because this is set in the future, I made the suits out of materials that were not as uncomfortable as the real things. I took some liberties thinking that in the future these suits would be much more streamlined. Also, I wanted to make it a little more interesting. Kelvin’s space suit gives him almost a mythical look, like a warrior.”
