His talent for drawing was discovered at an early age, and he moved to Bamako, the capital of the country, in order to develop his qualities. In the mid-fifties, the French photographer Gérard Guillat, recognising his ability, asked him to design the interior of his “Photo Service” studio and then later chose him as his apprentice. Malick Sidibé came there into contact with the concepts and techniques of photography and started out on his professional path.
In 1962 he founded the “Studio Malick” on the eastern side of Bamako, where he has
remained until today. He has always taken photographs out of enjoyment and the duties of his profession, and has never thought of photography as an artistic career.
The spirit of time has always been at the centre of Malick Sidibé’s attentions. One is made aware of his desire to fix the essence of an era in the true style of a chronicler.
