#Clothing, #sound, light, electricity, wind... the 'Electric Dress' by #artist Atsuko Tanaka
...originally from 1956 made of electric wires and colored lights is on view at the exhibition 'Atsuko Tanaka. The Art of Connecting' from 4 February until 6 May 2012 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. The multi-disciplinary artist (performances, installations, paintings...) Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005) belonged in the 1950s to the 'Gutai'-group, a project of artists who referenced the environment in postwar Japan.
"A piece of cloth flapping in the wind provided the inspiration for her 'Bell' installation, in which sound travels through space, while the flashing of a neon tube provided the idea for the 'Electric Dress'; using immaterial sounds or light to produce metaphorical expressions, there was nothing to equal TANAKA's rich and active imagination during the fifties." says Yuko Hasegawa, Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, in the press release on mot-art-museum.jp about the work of Atsuko Tanaka who has created several clothing alike wearable sculptures and visitor interactive installations that reflected the experiences the artist made herself in the world around her.
In the bi-lingual (English/Japanese) 222 pages exhibition-catalogue 'Atsuko Tanaka. The Art of Connecting', the early performance artist Atsuko Tanaka is cited: "There's been so much progress in medicine and science, with people even talking about flying to Mars, and I just want to create art that can coexist with these times."
