Fashion by Gucci, Ferragamo and F1 racing suits of the 70s at the movie 'Rush'
The story of "Rush" (movie release starts in September 2013) is about the rivalry between the Formula 1 drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth in the role of the British playboy) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl plays the disciplined Austrian) during the racing season in 1976. The drivers' characters are reflected by the fashion they wear; Hunt appears in Gucci, Lauda in Ferragamo. Costume designer Julian Day describes the style of Hunt as "more flamboyant", Lauda's "is slightly more conservative, in a beautiful way".
Costume designer Julian Day worked for the outfits together with the creative directors of two Italian fashion houses, Massimiliano Giornetti of Salvatore Ferragamo and Gucci's Frida Giannini. Gucci provided the clothes for the actors Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde (in the role of Hunt's wife Suzy Miller), and Ferragamo created the clothing for Daniel Brühl and Alexandra Maria Lara (plays Marlene Lauda).

Massimiliano Giornetti, creative director at Salvatore Ferragamo, explained on occasion of the world premiere in London his design approach: "I created Niki Lauda's character's wardrobe for the film with his most distinctive traits in mind, an extremely determined sportsman, obsessed with perfection, never leaving anything to chance, whether it be a strategic move or a stylistic detail. To reflect his strong and unyielding character, I chose exclusive fabrics, clean cuts and sharp forms for his clothes: from impeccably tailored fitted Prince of Wales jackets to short suede jackets with leather trim combined with denim. A stylish and subtly refined allure that is also the epitome of pure intrinsic elegance. All of which imbued with the unmistakeable fashion sense of the 1970s, which remains a source of highly modern inspiration".
Costume designer Julian Day speaks on rushmovie.com (go to 'story', 'production notes' page 21) about the changes of racing suits between the decades such as weight or advertising on the suits; the placing of the ads became a dramaturgical mean in 'Rush' as it signifies the success of Niki Lauda: "If you take 1976, the year most featured, and look at Niki's race suits, the advertising is all over the place. That's because he would be sponsored by such-and-such at one race, then that patch would come off and be replaced by another one for another race.... ....as Niki became more successful, we put more advertising on him. I did the same with all the drivers, certainly also for James."
