Tips: Nutrition when driving a car over longer distances
Yesterday, Seat Cars published food recommendations by Dr. Mari Carmen López from the brand’s medical centre together with video and arguments why it could have negative impact to drive a car with empty (low blood sugar) or too full stomach. Drinking enough water, pure or mixed with fruit juice or soft drinks, is mentioned explicitly: “Dehydration is just as dangerous for a driver as being under the influence of alcohol.”
Get inspired by Dr. Mari Carmen López’ menu for drivers:
Breakfast:
-Two slices of toast with cooked ham or cheese
-Piece of fruit
-Coffee or tea
In-between meal:
Vegetarian sandwich and water
Lunch:
-Salad
-Grilled or roast meat or fish
-Fruit
-Water and coffee or tea
Snack:
Fruit, yogurt and water
fig.: Seat Cars provides tips for “What kind of food sits well with driving?” by calculating with the amount of kilocalories (1,000 - 1,350 / day) consumed when driving. Drivers need not more than 2,000 / 2,500 kcal per day.
Another tip from the Seat Cars media release concerns European traffic rules. Seat cites the findings of a study about the reaction time which goes down - according to the research, by up to 44%. Traffic rules differ between European countries (penalty) and in the case of an accident, the fact that the driver was possibly distracted could be interpreted negatively by the insurance.
Dr. López recommends “making frequent stops and eating small quantities, and after the main meal, walk around for 15 minutes or take a nap to clear your head.”
