Top Music Videos 2021
Editorial selection of music videos from the tips published on fashion.at/music through the year 2021, so far.

The editorial selection of the 'Top Music Videos 2021' videos follows the same principle as last year. The five best videos are introduced with keywords, starting with 'Best outfits in a dance performance', followed by 'Political message communicated with wit', 'Sensitive approach to the situation of young persons', 'Norms, tolerance and self-acceptance', 'Judgment and colonialism'.

Best outfits in a dance performance

Dua Lipa's outfits (styled by Lorenzo Posocco, makeup by Lisa Eldrige) in the dance video 'Love Again':

Political message communicated with wit

When searching through the music tips of Fashion.at in 2021 for a video which communicates serious topics with wit, the Little Simz' video for 'Point and Kill' ft. Obongjayar filmed in Nigeria showing the musician in a retro-styled outfit is the highlight this year. The Fela Kuti-like song's strong political message to lead a self-determined life also when it's endangered by violence from authorities was released with a video which transports the serious message with wit.

Sensitive approach to the situation of young persons

When asked for a new artist who impressed with sensitive, authentic songs, Grammy 2022 nominated Arlo Parks must be top-ranked. In her video 'Hope', she addresses the loneliness of young persons who are isolated, locked in, and friendship.

Norms, tolerance and self-acceptance

Tolerance and self-acceptance are the topics of the next video highlight 2021. The text for the song 'Cure for Me' by Norwegian musician Aurora was developed from thoughts about why people want others press into normed patterns like it happens through concersion therapies to gay and lesbinan people. For the video, Aurora dances after a choreography inspired by the Futterwacken dance in the movie 'Alice In Wonderland'.

Judgment and colonialism

Judgment is also the topic at the next video presented in this review 2021. In the FKA Twigs video for the song 'Don't Judge Me', the fountain sculpture 'Fons Americanus', a monument of British slave trade, by Kara Walker appears as a dramaturgical stage setting. FKA Twigs wrote on Twitter: "it was an honour to shoot with kara walkers fountain exploring the interconnection of black history between africa, america and europe."
