LISETTE MODEL
June 28 - October 15, 2000
This exhibition represents another installment in series of exhibitions devoted to important Austrian émigré artists at the Kunsthalle Wien. Select groups of works demonstrate how Lisette Model's photographs - which at first glance seem to be closer to caricature than documentation - can conjure up in a visual image what would be hardly to describe in words. Thus, the rich foreigner whiling away his time sitting on the "Promenade des Anglais" in Nice (1934 onwards) is an almost surreal metaphor for a society in the process of being ruined by its own hubris. In her photographs of the poor in the South of France (after 1933) or later in New York's Lower East Side (from 1939 onwards), Model does attempt to idealize or sentimentalize her subjects: the evidence of misery does not rob the individual of his originality, nor the situation depicted of its absurdity. Model's rarely-seen portraits of famous jazz musicians represent a further focal point of the exhibition. The series from night clubs in New York (1941 onwards), the San Francisco Opera (1949) or the major jazz festivals in Newport and New York (1952-1954) reflect the former Schoenberg pupil's life-long fascination with music. They also provide eloquent testimony of Model's ability to quickly and effectively extract telling details from confusing situations, to transform human interrelationships into visual compositions and to present individual images in a wider context. Not least because of these qualities, Lisette Model became one of the key figures of modern art photography. Curator: Monika Faber This exhibition is the first major presentation of Lisette Model's œuvre in Austria. It will also be on view from January to March, 2001, at the Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland). Kuratorin: Monika Faber |
